What is AI Share of Voice?

In traditional marketing, Share of Voice (SoV) measures how much of the conversation your brand owns compared to competitors. AI Share of Voice applies the same concept to AI-generated answers: when someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Gemini about your product category, what percentage of recommendations go to you vs. your competitors?

For example, if you track 25 queries and AI mentions your brand in 8 of them but mentions your top competitor in 18 —� that competitor has significantly more AI Share of Voice. They're the brand AI is recommending, and you're the one being left out.

How Surfaced Detects Competitors

When you add your brand to Surfaced, our AI automatically identifies your competitors by analyzing:

  • Industry context —� what category you operate in and who the major players are
  • AI responses —� which brands AI consistently mentions alongside or instead of yours
  • Web presence —� sites with similar positioning and overlapping keywords

You can also manually add or remove competitors at any time. Surfaced tracks up to 10 competitors per brand, depending on your plan.
